Me at the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona

I think of myself as a bit of the thrill-seeker type, which is how I found myself bound for Spain to join hundreds of others in the most famous running of the bulls event in Pamplona. When one of my friends asked me about the event, it seemed out of the norm and I DEFINITELY wanted to try it.

The Running of the Bulls is a ceremony that takes place before bullfights during the seven-day festival of Sanfermines. Bullfights are performed by professionals, however, the running of the bulls before the bullfight is strictly for the brave and foolhardy.

At 8 a.m. you meet in the middle of the city dressed in the event’s standard attire, all white clothing, a red belt and a red scarf for your neck. There were 100’s upon 100’s of people that showed up in their outfits ready to run. As we anxiously waited for the bulls to arrive, every now and then we were given a false start.  When it was really time to run, there was no mistaking it.

An entire crowd of people started to run towards us and we started to run, as we knew the bulls were getting closer. It was like bungee jumping times ten! The adrenaline rush was so great that when it was over, I was extremely exhausted.

Being surrounded by the bulls, the 100’s of people, running and trying not to fall while looking back was a rush! It was like holding on to your life, because their were no seat belt to save you......just you.
